"In the time before, when the timorous partings of young couples in love filled the world with new car scent, the somewhat impersonal hands of fate arranged so that my mother would be born with the gift, the gift of practical resignation to inevitable circumstance, and now my mother gives me career advice. “Get a job at Dairy Queen” she says “I like their ice-cream cakes”, see the women in my family have a motto “follow your dreams, and you’ll end up a teacher” which is a perfectly fine career, but I’d rather be a travelling poet slash part time seal trainer, a full time back scratcher slash casual gorilla groomer, a coo-coo clock liberator, a door to door…door salesman. I’d like to start up my own union of unemployed artists, who sleep on their friends couches while dreaming of their next big-break. I’d like to take my art-history degree and make a career out of it. But my mother wanted to be a linguist and my sister wanted to be an archaeologist, and the fact that both of them are now teachers has lead me to discover that there is no such career as an art and culture studies…ist. So I’m growing up a little bit desperate, trying to set an example of how far you can go to avoid the inevitable, because most things I want to do seem impossible or at least improbable, like…oh I don’t know…remaining hopeful?"
